Centre of HOPE - Ranchi

The Slums of Harmu, in Ranchi, teems with children, most of whom spend their time picking up rags to sell for a few rupees, or wandering about without purpose or future.Ninety percent of them have never gone to school of any sort; all of them come from severely impoverished families who are far from being able to consistently have even a single meal each day.

The school in Ranchi was started in May 2003 with one teacher teaching 10 students under a tree. Now it has two classrooms packed with 30 committed students. Besides providing them with basic education, the children are also taught moral values and made aware of health and hygiene. The average income of the parents of these children is less than Rupees Twenty a day. These children who came without any hope or dreams in their lives have been transformed into a confident, joyful, and excited group.

Simple Answers

Working with the urban poor we see so many problems. Ignorance, alcohol, violence, disease and despair conspire to make poverty a maze which is hard to escape. Even for those trying to make a difference, the riddle often seems too difficult to solve. Yet sometimes the answers are simple.

Like so many others in Ranchi, Rohit Kumar’s parents can hardly provide their family with food each day. For them, the idea of a proper education for their children was no more than a fantasy until they heard about the HOPE worldwide school. So, when their seven-year-old son first arrived here, he could not talk properly and, of course, he could not read or write at all. He tells us that he had spent much of his short life in fear. Keenly aware of his speech problems, Rohit had locked himself indoors, away from a world with which he could not properly communicate.

But all that has changed. Thanks to the patient attention of his teachers, the boy has blossomed. Now he speaks clearly, reads fluently and can write his ideas down as well. For Rohit, school is a thrill, a refuge, and an escape route from the poverty trap he inherited. And for the teachers here at Ranchi, Rohit is a shining example of all that is made possible by the application of simple things – patience, hope, love.

Vicky Oraon father is a daily wager, whose income is hardly enough to feed his three small kids. But Vicky’s father dreamt just like any other parent that his son could get to study in a school of good repute. As he couldn’t teach his child, he allowed Vicky to come to our non-formal school with much apprehension. Within a year, Vicky was a changed boy. He had learnt so much that when he sat for the admission test in one of the premium schools in Ranchi, he passed it with flying colours. His father is very grateful and now believes that his other two kids could also benefit through HOPE worldwide school and so he has started to send them. HOPE worldwide staff is very happy that they can play a part in shaping the destiny of children like Vicky Oraon.
